A Beginner's Guide to Cigars

Never smoked a cigar before? You are in the right place. This guide covers everything you need to know before your first visit to a cigar lounge — how to choose, how to cut, how to light, and how to actually enjoy the experience.

Why Cigars Are Different

A cigar is not a cigarette. The experience is fundamentally different — slower, more intentional, and built around flavor rather than nicotine. A quality premium cigar can take 45 minutes to two hours to smoke. The point is not to rush through it. The point is to slow down.

Most first-time cigar smokers are surprised by how much flavor is actually there — and how much the experience changes from the first third to the last.

Choosing Your First Cigar

The most common mistake beginners make is starting with something too strong. A full-bodied Nicaraguan cigar can be overwhelming if your palate is not accustomed to it. Here is what to look for:

Wrapper color as a guide

  • Claro (light tan): Mild, creamy, often sweet. Good starting point.
  • Colorado (medium brown): Medium-bodied, balanced. The most versatile.
  • Maduro (dark brown to black): Full-bodied, rich, often with chocolate or coffee notes. Not for first-timers.

Recommended first cigars

  • Arturo Fuente Hemingway (medium-bodied, excellent construction)
  • Oliva Connecticut Reserve (mild, smooth, approachable)
  • Macanudo Café (classic mild cigar, widely available)

When you visit Humidor on Austin, tell our staff it is your first time. They will ask you a few questions and find the right cigar for where you are starting.

How to Cut a Cigar

Most premium cigars have a closed cap at the head (the end you put in your mouth). Before smoking, you need to cut this cap to create an opening.

The straight cut is the most common and beginner-friendly. Use a guillotine cutter and cut just above the cap line — you want to remove the cap without cutting too far down the body of the cigar. A clean cut prevents the wrapper from unraveling.

We keep cutters available at the lounge. Ask if you need one.

How to Light a Cigar

Lighting a cigar correctly makes a significant difference in how it smokes. A few rules:

Use a butane lighter or cedar matches. Avoid regular lighters with lighter fluid — the chemical taste will affect the flavor of the cigar. Avoid candles for the same reason.

Toast the foot first. Hold the cigar at a 45-degree angle and rotate it slowly over the flame without touching the flame directly. You want to see the edges of the tobacco begin to glow before you take your first draw.

Draw slowly. Once the foot is toasted, bring the cigar to your mouth and draw slowly while continuing to rotate over the flame. You should see an even cherry form across the entire foot.

Do not inhale. Unlike cigarettes, cigar smoke is meant to be tasted in the mouth, not inhaled into the lungs. Draw the smoke in, let it sit on your palate, then exhale.

How to Smoke a Cigar

Once lit, the main thing to remember is to pace yourself. A cigar should be smoked slowly — one draw every 30–60 seconds. Smoking too fast overheats the cigar and makes it harsh.

Let it rest. If you need to set it down, rest it in an ashtray. A cigar will go out on its own if left for a few minutes. You can relight it — just re-toast the foot first.

Do not tap the ash too often. Unlike cigarettes, cigar ash is structural. A long, solid ash actually helps keep the cigar burning cool and even. Let it build to about an inch before gently rolling it off in the ashtray.

What to Drink With It

Water is always a good choice — it keeps your palate clean. Beyond that:

  • Coffee pairs well with mild to medium cigars
  • Bourbon or whiskey is the classic pairing for medium to full-bodied cigars
  • Beer (particularly craft lagers or stouts) works well with a range of cigars
  • Avoid anything too sweet — it can make the cigar taste bitter by contrast
