Why Downtown Waco Needed a Cigar Lounge — and What We Built

The story behind Humidor on Austin — why we opened on Austin Avenue, what we built, and what we believe a great cigar lounge should be.

Why Downtown Waco Needed a Cigar Lounge — and What We Built

Downtown Waco has changed dramatically in the last decade. The Magnolia effect brought national attention, new restaurants opened, the Brazos riverfront came alive, and Austin Avenue started to feel like a destination again. But for all the growth, one thing was missing: a proper place to slow down.

Not a bar. Not a restaurant. A place where the pace is set by the length of a cigar — where an hour is a reasonable amount of time to spend on a single drink and a single conversation.

That's what we built at Humidor on Austin.

The Gap We Saw

Before we opened, if you wanted a premium cigar in Waco, your options were limited to a few tobacco shops with limited selection and no real place to sit. The lounge experience — the walk-in humidor, the curated spirits, the room designed for unhurried conversation — didn't exist here.

We believed Waco was ready for it. The city has a growing professional class, a major university, a tourism economy built around Magnolia and the Baylor Bears, and a downtown corridor that was finally becoming what it always had the potential to be. The timing was right.

What We Built

We took a historic storefront at 804 Austin Avenue — steps from the Brazos River, in the heart of the Austin Avenue corridor — and built a lounge from scratch.

The walk-in humidor holds over 1,000 premium cigars from 79+ brands: Padrón, Arturo Fuente, Davidoff, Oliva, Liga Privada, My Father, Rocky Patel, Perdomo, and more. Every stick is selected by hand. Nothing generic makes it to the shelf.

The room is designed for the experience. Teal velvet seating. A bar. A large-scale mural by Waco artist Cade Kegerreis that anchors the space and sets the tone. The kind of room you want to stay in.

We opened in 2024 under Founding Table Hospitality, the multi-brand portfolio I operate across downtown Waco. Humidor on Austin sits alongside J.S. Barnett's Whiskey House, Kairova Coffee, and Drunken Duck Kitchen — each concept built to stand on its own, each sharing a commitment to doing things properly.

What We Believe

We believe a great cigar lounge should be open to everyone. No membership required to walk in, browse the humidor, find a seat, and stay as long as you like. The Locker Program — private lockers, member pricing, priority access — is available for guests who want more. But the door is open to anyone 21 and older.

We believe the ritual matters. A cigar is not a product. It's a practice — one that rewards patience, rewards attention, and rewards the willingness to be present for an hour without looking at your phone.

We believe Waco deserves this. The city has earned a place where the pace slows down, the conversation deepens, and the evening earns its length.
